– Today, on Kitchen Gadgets, we’re testing the automatic fish skinner, Skinzit, versus a chef’s knife. – Um, sorry Cliff, no. – No? – No, I’m doing it.

Okay. Bye. Ladies and gentlemen,
my name is Esther Choi, and I am the new host of
the show, Kitchen Gadgets. And today, I am testing the
automatic fish skinner, Skinzit. (machine whirs) Versus the knife. The Skinzit is supposed to skin
your fish in half the time, that you can do with your knife. This lever is supposed to
grip your fish at the end, and then this part will help you skin it. Skinzit is also just like a weird name. I have some beautiful branzini here, which can be a little
bit difficult to skin just because it’s so thin. If you were to do this with a knife, depending on your skill level, would take about a minute or two. But we’re gonna go straight
into the competition. The knife versus the
Skinzit, three-on-three, and then we’re gonna
time it to see who does it faster and better. Going into this, I’m
actually a little bit nervous because I think I’m
gonna lose to the Skinzit and I know that usually the knife skills always win on this show, but I feel like I’m gonna be the first one to lose to a gadget, which is pretty sad. And go. Gosh. Alright, that was terrible. Two. Three. Time. That took 45 seconds,
and already I’m noticing that there is a little
bit of loss in the fish because you have to notch it to skin it. And there’s a little bit of meat on the skin. It’s not good, it’s not good. So let’s go to the Skinzit. And, go. (machine whirs) And time. Wow, that was really fast. Like it kind of alarmed me. So I feel like if you grab
the end and went like this, I would’ve saved a little bit of time, but then your also kind
of like sticking your hand which is kind of scary. And honestly, I just didn’t
want to put my hand there, and it was not very natural to me. So it took a little bit
longer to pull the skin out, but I’m sure if I get
used to it, and practice, it could be a lot faster and smoother. Let’s compare products. I mean, this is pretty spectacular, because you get no loss of fish. It’s really beautiful,
you can actually still see like some silver on the fish, which means that it’s
a really good skin job. The clean-up of this guy, quite simple, turn, pull, and then you
just like wash this part, you wipe down here. And then the knife, which you
know you have in your home. And it’s like a scale that you would have to continue to practice. So is it worth it for 150 dollars? I would say that if you eat
fish, three to four times a week, and you don’t want
the skin, this is it for you. If not, you don’t mind, skinning the fish, or maybe just cooking the
fish with the skin on it, then I would say 150 dollars
is a little bit high. If you own a restaurant, like I do. This is definitely worth it, and I think that I’m gonna
take this to my restaurant for my guys, because it’s
pretty freaking amazing. (machine whirs) It’s amazing, honestly. Look at this. That’s crazy. I’m feeling very emotional right now, just because I feel like I
lost to a kitchen gadget, but sometimes you know technology wins. And this thing, I’m still operating it, so I still own it, and

  3. You have a restaurant?…you REALLY need to practice and use the CORRECT knife in filleting ie: Fish fillet knife

    Secondly
    why would you remove the skin? some of the reasons is that is where the flavor is, where the fatty goodness and omegas hide, especially in salmon.The skin of a salmon contains the highest concentration of omega-3 fatty acids on the fish. There’s strong evidence that these fatty acids can reduce triglyceride levels and decrease your chances of heart disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.
    Cooking fillets with the skin on can also keep nutrients and oils inside the salmon itself that might otherwise be lost in the preparation process…..

  4. I literally can skin a whole salmon fillet in 8 seconds. I just use a very sharp long knife and give it 2 swipes and its done. No meat left on the skin and the skin i bake till crisp its like sex

  6. But a knife is a knife, and thus useful for far more than just skinning a fish; it's easier to clean up too. Pass on the Skinzit.

  7. Also take into account that you have to clean. Cleaning a single knife is much faster then cleaning that machine. Also if you master the skill of skinning a fish with a knife you can do a much better job, much faster.

  8. Comments are all about her knife skills, but what about her hygiene skills? Wiping down a small part of this tool that is clearly covered in fish bits won't clean it, not to mention that she touched the handle after touching fish. She owns a restaurant FFS!

  9. How is this fair? When you have a person that doesn’t even know how to skin a fish? Should have gotten a professional Chef to and timed it or someone that knows how to . A lot of people won’t skin a fish, if they don’t know how to

  10. Sometimes…. I pull on it so hard… i rip the skin. Well my dad taught me how not to rip the skin by using Skinzit instead of my own hands. Will you show me? I'd be right happy to (whirring skin removing sounds)

  11. Thanks Esther. Not everyone is a chef and knows how to do things perfectly, except for everyone commenting in here, so I enjoyed your review and was impressed by that thing but ill never buy it because I don't skin enough fish. I'll do exactly what you did with my knife. 😉

  15. Esther sucks at skinning fish with a knife. I feel like the average person who went in trying to skin a fish would at least do a quick search on how to and pick up basic techniques. She just stretched and tear the meat off the skin. So it is not comparable at all.

    With that said the gadget actually did a great job skinning fish.

    Why? Because she literally said this herself, and I'm transcribing it because of the people who have "pro skills", yet you're so stupid you can't comprehend basic language. She doesn't even have an accent.

    By the way, a "real" pro can do anything with a single knife. You talk skills, no? IRONIC.

    And she quite literally says… "I would say that if you eat fish, three to four times a week, and you don't want the skin, this is it for you." She continues to mention that if you don't mind the skin, etc, etc.

    Note, you even get people who don't understand, people eat in all sorts of ways, sometimes people don't want fish skin, but no, she's a terrible person instead. Yup, that's the conclusion.

    Also, are we getting to the point of sheer stupidity that we assume all restaurant owners, nay… ALL RESTAURANTS deal with FISH?

    Also, I don't understand. GADGETS ARE ALWAYS MEANT FOR PEOPLE TO DO SOMETHING IN BULK, or are considered as an INVESTMENT over time. Same morons who probably have microwaves but somehow think nothing of that.

    Also, we live in a world where there's always someone BETTER. This means someone can easily be more proficient when dealing with fish versus chicken.

    Watch the god damn video before pulling this mythical crap out of your ass.

    Also, change happens. SHOCK. Let's not assume there's some unfair situation or whatnot, because unlike you, there's a staff involved. It's not just a single person.

    Isn't that right, to just "buy the right knife"? And spend "15 minutes" learning? Different types of fish, different methodology, different levels, different learning capabilities.

    I love food because it's never "one" and "all", it's full of variety. Much like randomly watching shows on TV/YT/wherever. But, y'know, let's hate on a person.
    Open-minded understanding of the concept of technology and how it's changed people? No, no, no!

  19. When was the last time that knife was sharpened? If a device scares you then why try using it? Maybe you should have read the directons first. Any idiot should know not to follow the meat with their fingers.

And why does she stop the skinning with the machine just a second too early so that she has to pull the very end of the skin off by force?! Why not just let the god damn machine do its job?

  24. This is nonsense. Nobody uses a chefs knife to skin fish and if you did, you would not use the technique used here. Use a thin-bladed knife, angle it slightly down and pull the fillet over the knife while pressing the broad side of the knife down. Everyone with minimal experience would know this. The results would be equivalent and the time saved not having to clean the gadget would tip the scales to the already owned knife.

  25. Fish skin is good for you and tasty if you're not a child. Unless you are making sushi or sashimi at home no skinning is needed.
