Fly Fishing Rods, Reels & Line : Determine Whether Hip Waders or Chest Waders Are Best for You

Hi, I’m Jim from Zoar Outdoor on behalf
of expertvillage.com. In this segment we’re going to be talking about fishing gear and
especially fly fishing. The other consideration with waders is whether or not you’d like
to have a hip wader arrangement, which just comes to about here or a full chest wader,
such as these which come right to your armpits. Generally speaking if you’re fishing in
water that doesn’t go above your knees, hip waders are good. Another real advantage
of hip waders is mobility and the fact that you’re not going to be standing where you
ought to be fishing. So hip waders will inherently put you in a better fishing position, but
if you’re going to go in above your knees especially to waist high, then it’s real
important that you wear chest waders. You’ll see also that there is a difference in materials
here. These waders are gore-tex or entrant type material, and these happen to be made
of neoprene. This is a real old pair you can see how ready they are, the seam tape is starting
to come off, but these waders are 15 years old and I’ve used them hard for 15 seasons.
Neoprene is wonderful stuff, it’s easy to repair with glue, you can do the same thing
on the neoprene’s here, you can see that I had to patch a little hole pin leak. So
you find that leak by filling the inside with water, where water becomes evident, then you
get some seam sealer and apply it and it’s as good as new. So the choice of whether to
use hip boots or chest waders is governed by the water you’re wading in. Another thing
to really be aware of is that with the chest waders you need some way of closing down the
wader on your body so it will keep water from coming in. So if you don’t have an arrangement
like this built into the waders, make sure you wear a belt. So those are the basic considerations
with waders whether you want them to be boot foot or stocking foot and whether you want
them to be chest waders or hip waders.
