Gear Spotlight: Honda 4-stroke 20 HP Outboard ► All 4 Adventure TV

I’ve been using the Honda four-stroke 20 horsepower
outboard since series 1, so that’s basically a good 9 years. I remember in season 1 when I first chucked
the Honda on my tinny, and we headed out to this remote location which took us two days
to get to. Had that outboard have broken down, that would
have been the end of us. So in season 9, we took the old Honda 20,
and we took it to a whole new level. And not only do they go on the back of our
little SeaJay 3.7 Nomads, which are perfect for it, but this season we decided to put
it on the back of 6– I think it might have been 6 or 7 meter bamboo raft. I’ll tell you what, if I had this back at
Noosa, I could charge money and take people out for gondola rides on this in the afternoon
in the Noosa River. I tell you what, I reckon I do all right. Simon’s gondola tours. I like it. I want to take it home. So the one thing I really like about the Honda 20 is the fact that it’s got this hydraulic assist tilt. There’s a ram there that assists the outboard
in lifting it up and putting it down. And that is the key if you’re running with
small tinnies in shallow water. Get out of this pretty shallow stuff. So Honda’s got some great features. It’s got what they call a throttle tensioner,
so you can actually hold the throttle where you want it to by just tensioning the tensioner. It’s got steering tensioner down here as well. It’s got all those little things. Yes it’s a little bit heavier than a two-stroke,
but I’ll tell you what, you won’t have to carry half as much fuel when you’ve got a
20 horsepower on there. And mate, the reliability. It would have to be one of the most reliable
engines on the market. You can’t beat it.
