If You Do This, You’ll Never Have to Repair Rust on Your Car

If You Do This, You’ll Never Have to Repair Rust on Your Car

rev up your engines,
today I’m going to talk about how to prevent rust on your car, now to prevent
rust, first you have to understand what rust is, rust is electrochemical
oxidation and in the case of cars, the steel, when it comes in contact with
oxygen in the atmosphere, water vapor atmosphere and other things like salt
that they put on the road and up north and winter, it starts an electrochemical
reaction that will eat up the steel in your car, it actually creates a weak type
of battery acid, that eats stuff up it’s an electrochemical reaction, it uses
electricity and chemistry to eat up the metal, now cars of course are painted to
prevent the steel from getting its electrochemical reaction, now when my
grandfather was young, Model T Fords they used lacquer based stuff, they paint it and
buff it, and paint it and buffed it, to have layers and layers of paint that they buffed to
make it look good, but the basis of modern car painting is much different,
the metal has a primer type coat on it then it has base coat, which is the color,
then it has a clear coat to protect that all those layers protect the bare metal,
and as long as those layers of protections are still there, your car
won’t rust, and when it comes to solid parts, the frame of the car and
crossmembers and stuff, these are generally electroplated when the vehicle
is built, the metal is a negative charge and the paint is the positive charge, and
when the body of the car goes into the tank, it coats it all with a zinc based
primer, now Zinc is used because it has to slow corrosion rate and it can be
used sacrificially, so instead of eating up your car, it can eat up some of the
zinc, and as you can see the process works, this is a 1994 Toyota Celica, look
there’s no rust even on the wheel arches here, the process keeps it from rusting
and I know people are going to say, Scotty hey you live in Texas cars don’t rust
there, well actually it’s very humid here and if they start to rust, they rust
really bad and if you live on the beach they would, because it’s saltwater, but my
mother still lives near Buffalo, the heart of the Rust Belt and her 20 year old
Toyota Corolla doesn’t have any rust on it.
the just works. as long as you keep the
coatings from being rubbed off or cracked off. or if you get in a wreck,
they’re not resealed and as long as the process was done
correctly, for instance there were some 1990s Toyota Tacoma pickup trucks, that
they didn’t coat the frames correctly and a lot of them rotted away and
Toyota had to replace a whole bunch of frames for free because of that, so you
have to realize, that this process of covering the steel is just a cover, it’s not
like hot zinc galvanized, where you dip it when it’s hot and hot melted zinc,
and then it becomes part of it, and if it gets scratched it doesn’t matter, this
stuff if it gets scratched or knocked off, it will start to corrode inside, so
your whole thing is to keep the coating intact and here’s how you do it, you’re suppose to wax your car four times a year, once each season, that keeps the clear coat
supple, so that it won’t crack and then water and stuff can get inside, I like
this Nufinish, technically it’s not a wax, it’s a polish but it does the same
thing, it protects the paint from cracking, because you have to realize,
it’s metal it expands and contracts in the Sun, the paint has to expand and
contract too, if it gets all hard and dried out, it won’t and then you’ll see
all that kicked up paint where it’s flaking off on your car, and here’s a tip
if you ever do get a scratch on your car it’s a good idea to just have a little
clear coat and some masking tape so if you do get a big scratch or a bump, you
can at least tape the area up and spray it with some clear coat and that will
seal it so it won’t rust, granted to do a perfect job you’d have to sand it down
to the bare metal, then put some primer on, then put the base coat color on, and then put clear coat on, but at least putting a clear coat over anything that’s been hit,
it’s going to seal it in, as long as you do it fast enough before it starts
rusting, but let’s say you got a real rust bucket that’s already started rusting,
these rust preventative paints actually work quite well, I use this rust bullet
protective coating on the frame of my Celica, because the frame is on the bottom,
rocks hit it, all kinds of things hit it and when the paint on the bottom starts
chipping off, you want to seal it with something like this, so rust
doesn’t start and eat up your frame especially for you guys living up north in
the Rust Belt hey all that salt water that comes on
when you put salt on the road and gets with the slush, that gets all
over it, of course you want to try to rinse it off whenever you can, but you
want to have the metal that it gets on sealed before anything else will happen,
I know a lot of guys up north before winter, they’ll jack up their car or truck
they’ll look under it and if they see that there’s a bunch of rust starting, they’ll
just surface rub a lot of it off, this can be applied on somewhat rusty metal and then
they can spray this on, roll it on anywhere you want, and then it’ll protect
it for the winter, now you don’t have to worry about salts on the roads and the
winter here in Houston, maybe once every 30 years when it does freeze, but hey I
know guys down in Galveston that live on the beach, and they use the stuff on
their frames, because they’re driving around in a saltwater atmosphere right
on the Gulf of Mexico, and it keeps them from rotting away, because I’ve seen a
bunch of them that didn’t, and they just rotted like mad, within five or six years,
because let’s face it, big rocks and stuff generally aren’t flying on the paint of
your car, but on the bottom of the car there’s all kinds of stuff on the road
that’s being thrown up and whacking against them, since these anti-rust
coatings can be sprayed on, you can put them in a spray gun, hey it’s not a big
job, you don’t care about the bottom of the car what it looks like, you don’t
have to be a pro to actually paint the car to make it look shiny on the top,
this is the bottom, you don’t care you just want the coating on there so it
won’t rust, because ultimately the purpose of stopping rust is to prevent
electrochemical oxidation on the bare metal, as long as that metal has got a good
solid coating on it, it will not rust, so if you never want to miss another one
of my new car repair videos, remember to ring that Bell!

  2. I just buy the anti rust oil in a can and spray it anywhere there is an opening in the body so I cover the inside of the fenders , doors etc and I do that every couple of years and it does wonders, the bottom of the car I paint with black high resistant paint and it goes on the undercarriage , the muffler , everywhere at the bottom and it never peels and works great , here in Canada they love to salt the roads like potato chips

  3. Everyone where I live calls them Toyota Corrosions (Corolla). I know Scotty loves Toyota, but where I'm from they rust worse then any other brand.

  4. we use rust check up north scotty. you spray it on before winter and after winter after a good cleaning and you get no rust.

  5. what if you have no way to lift up your car exept if you take it to a mechanic that takes away your paycheck, kind of : P

  6. I've been using fluid film here in Maine to coat the underside of my car before winter. I wonder what works better.

  7. Her in WI, rust is almost always the limiting factor in the life of a car. Perfectly good motors go to the crusher because the chassis are shot.

  8. WOW I've never seen an Old car like that look so rust free!!!!! WOW!!! Come to the NB in Canada. OUR air is salty. We use raw salt on the roads for 8months of the year.

  9. Thanks Scotty. My 95 F150 i rebuilt all this year is going to get undercoating done since i moved from the midwest to the northeast. Very informative.

  10. este tipo es un genio! I'd say every video has something important to teach to people who ignore very basic concepts. I've been losing money for years, where were you, Mr. Scotty!?

  11. Was waiting for Scotty to go into nostalgia mode and tell me us how AMC used to dip their RAMBLERS in a zinc bath. Only reason cars have any rust protection at all is because they were mandated by law to have it. Check out [email protected] 1.53 ..Rust starting at very bottom of Scotty's fender.?!?

  12. How can you best protect your car from the salt in the winter up north? Seems like it eats up everybody's cars

  13. Toyota had to replace my girlfriend's 2006 Toyota Sequoia frame for free in 2018. One of the frame pieces broke. If it didn't break, they would just have sprayed on that worthless black rust converter as part of their recall issue.

  14. Friend had a great question.. won't flex seal work? Flex seal will peel off metal,it's too gloppy. The thin adherent sprayable rust preventative is good to use.sticks chemically, and gets deep into nookes and crannies.

  15. I found rust and flaked paint on my rear springs and lower bracket so I scrapped off and applied rust converter which turned it black looked so much better

  16. I use Rust Bullet on everything, I use it as a primer for bodywork. I drill holes in door jambs and spray it in the rockers and quarter panels. I put it on every part I replace on my vehicles then spray paint it with color of choice. I’ve put it on complete engines before painting them and holds up better than regular engine paint.! Scotty knows what he’s talking about.

  17. Hey Scotty. How about those wax or wax petroleum based products you apply to vehicle that coats the metal. Such as NHOU, PSC or Krown. Excellent video

  18. Bonjour, aucun rapport avec la rouille. Exite t'il des traductions sur YouTube car cela serait mieux pour certaines personnes.

  19. Im gonna try it. I got a great deal on my new ep3. I was gonna have it vinyl wrapped..but it euro yellow pearl…they made 350k in that exact model and something like 500k in the revised model..only 3500 were euro yellow..i hate to kill a unicorn.

  20. The problem up north is cars rust from the inside out. You need to oil spray the car and inject oil into the cavities to really prevent rust. By the time you see it, it’s too late.

  21. I have a 2005 Chevy Colorado that’s rusted directly under the cab near the passenger door side its a big hole 🕳 the tail gate is rusted that’s a hole and the paint is chipping

  22. Every car after 2010 doesn't rust. They use polymer plastic which doesn't ever rust. My friend has a 2008 golf mk5 which hasn't rusted in 11 and a half years! He went through one of the worst conditions but it still hasnt rusted.

  23. what the call rost what …please write down…why you dont show people properly the stuff or name…just bla bla bla😁😁😁😁

  24. I see 40.50,60,70 thousand doller pickups a year old And older falling to the lazy chemical, it's damage beyond our control just turn it into your insurance we are not the ones damaging our vehicles let the insurance company's and the state's that put that stuff on the roads figure it out

  25. My 07 Dodge Ram bed wheel wells are rusting from the inside out. I see this now on a lot of Dodge Rams -_- Its almost like they don't care. I cleaned the wheel wells when I washed the truck and its rusting between the inner and outer fenders. So Much for trying to have something nice

  26. First lets get the"why" first, it's because faulty manufactures allow oxidation to get to the steel…( FORD GM DODGE)

  27. Hey scotty, I want to paint the entire bottom of my truck with POR15. (Its very rusty…) is there anything i should avoid painting or can i just go gung-ho on the bottom. (I dont have the slightest bit of mechanical knowledge, Thanks) ill literally paint everything i can get my brush on unless theres something I should avoid. Thx

  28. My 91 chevy c1500 cheyenne has a finger size hole in the frame, and that hole is expanding and cracking more. The hole is between the cab and bed mount.the whole frame is rusty and crusty, should i junk it?,has 150k and 4 speed manual transmisison with overdrive, shat should i do?

  29. I noticed the wheel well under my battery was all ate out and so I used what I had, which was some galvanized flashing material, got some self drilling screws and built up a few layers of that and then used fiberglass matt over it. My resin and hardener was over a decade old but it still hardened. Amazing. Now I am looking for some kind of paint POR 15 or something much cheaper. I think the battery was being washed off with rain water or something, or something was falling off the battery over the years onto the wheel well, and that wasn't good.

  30. So hes talking about stuff that was done when the car was made. Im here because i have little surface rust starting in a few placds. I sanded it, put loctite rust elininator then sprayed rustolem paint and primer on it.

  31. I know you're trying to help however, focus on the problem and get to the point. We just want to know how to fix the problem. Thanks!

  32. Scotty how well does the electronic anti rust inhibitors work verses having your auto chemically undercoated? I've herd pro's and cons on these electronic devices but! One guy I work with who still has his truck after 10 years of owner ship said that they do work. His mechanic had asked him why his truck didn't have any rust on it if it had never been under coated he showed him this electronic device and said that it had been preventing his truck from rusting?

  33. I have used a whole gallon of black rustoleum paint on my ford f150 and went through a whole winter still looks great yes it had some rust but it wasn't too bad I do tend to knock off the loose stuff first and then paint and hope of the best I find that alot of people try an use that rubberized undercoating crap which I find to make it worse

  34. A guy I work with bought a 2017 Toyota Camry TRD edition with the V6 at $400 bones a month with ZERO interest, didn't have it for 6 MONTHS because of the shoddy paint job.
Long story short, rust was forming on the trunk lid, took it in, had it repainted under warranty.
Said paint job got WORSE and strated rotting further.
Toyota…THE COMPANY told him to go pound salt after fighting.
Traded it in for a…wait for it… TOYOTA AVALON!… Because it had 15 more horsepower 🤣
Edit: The Camry is now under RECALL for the shoddy factory paint issues 🤣🤣🤣

  35. I always thought body panels and most metal rusted from the inside out, you won’t see it until it gets bad and works through to the outside

  36. Best thing to prevent rust up north is buying a brand new car, lift the car off the frame, and cake on POR15. Undercoating lasts like a year up here and rinsing it off in freezing temperatures does not work because it the water freezes to the bottom of your car if the car wash isn’t out of order because it’s so cold. If you do rinse under your car, now you have to drive on salted roads to get it home.

  37. Frames rust from the inside out, putting rust preventative on the outside will not do anything to halt the rust on the inside.

  38. Keep the undercarriage washed thoroughly…especially during the Winter in corrosive environments. Using oil literally everywhere including the insides of all body panels will pretty much slow it to a crawl. Using a place like Krown is only like 100 dollars a year and well worth every single penny!

  39. Man this guy can really talk fast!!!
But I say he is about all wrong!!!
If you don't want you car to rust on you!!! First you must know why it rusts in the first place!!!
And that first place is!!! When the car or truck is made, they leave vacant air pockets in the metal behind the fender, and bumbers!!! ETC.!!! AND ETC.!!! WHAT I CALL AIR POCKETS ARE WHERE DIRT AND MUD CAN AND DOES GET IN THESE AIR POCKETS BUT CAN'T GET OUT!!! SO AS YOU ARE TRAVELING AROUND. SOMETIME DRY DIRT FLYS ONTO THESE AIR POCKETS. WHEN IT IS SNOWING AND WHEN ITD RAINING, WATER, SNOW, AND MUD GETS INTO THESE AIR POCKETS!!! WHICH EVENTUALLY FILL UP WITH THE DIRT!!! THEN AS YOUR CAR OR TRUCK IS GOING THROUGH THE CAR WASH!!! OR WHEN YOU ARE WASHING THE CAR YOURSELF! IT IS SNOWING, RAINING IT KEEPS THIS DIRT, AND MUD DAMP MAYBE ALL YEAR ROUND AND THIS DAMP DIRT IS WHAT DOES THE RUSTING OF YOUR CARS BODY!!!
IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME!!! JUST FIND A CAR AT THE JUNK YARD THAT HAS RUST DAMAGE AND THEN TAKE A SCREW DRIVER AND POKE THROUGH THE RUST AND YOU WILL FIND THE DAMP DIRT AND MUD RIGHT ST THE RUST SPOT!
SO WHAT YOU MUST DO I TO GET UNDER YOUR CAR AND TAKE A HOSE AND SCRAPER AND CLEAN ALL OF THE DIRT A F MUD OUT OF THE SPOTS!!! And maybe drill holes to where these air pockets can't hold water!!! AND DO THIS EVERY SO OFTEN AND THE RUST WILL STOP!!!
    Larry

  40. I live horrible climate with snow and salt. Rust usually start from inside and work it way out. Doesn't how many times you wash the car, wax, grease, undercoat, polish it, eventually rust will find it out to corroded sheet metal. Rust is cancer and it never stop sleeping or eating metal.

  41. Comment on a RUSTING car!!
Man this guy can really talk fast!!!

  42. You can’t paint over rust. You have to get whatever surface you paint completely cleaned and down to bare metal or it will come right back. Simple as that.

  43. How about the rust underneath…like the frame. And from the inside out. You can ONLY slow rust down by rust proofing. The only way to stop rust is to park your car on the moon or in a vacuum chamber!!!!!

  44. SCOTTY– THE US NAVY USES STUFF CALLED OSPHO. IT TURNS RUST (IRON OXIDE) INTO IRON PHOSPHATE WHICH IS PERMANENT AND NEVER RUSTS AGAIN. THEN PAINT OVER IT AND ITS SEALED AWAY FOREVER. OSPHO.

  45. They don't sell that anywhere, you gotta order it. It's so annoying. I'm
going to make a store that sells all the good products you have to
order. I'm going to be rich!!

  46. well Scotty up here in Canada we do spray undercoating first on our frames then after that we take our vehicles to get it sprayed with a dripless oil under the chassis and another type of oil for inside the panels like the doors excetera ..and under the hood. So I get this done every year in the fall..so if we want our cars to last that's what we do.
