Waste of money? Micro Fishing Rods

Waste of money? Micro Fishing Rods

Okay, guys I’ve got a lot of Pretty strange rods and reels here. We’ve been doing a lot of this micro fishing stuff with these little tiny funny-looking rods Today we’re going to talk about if these are toys or if these are tools how well do they actually work? and should you spend your hard-earned money on something like this these days our time is precious to us and Wasting our time is oftentimes wasting our money. So should you waste your time with micro rods? stay tuned to find out First up you guys have seen this before the Emmrod now. This is a knockoff M rod from China I got for around 35 bucks Took about a week to ship to me And it doesn’t come with the reel the reel is my own this is a This is an Ocean City 350. It’s a vintage reel it actually doesn’t have any anti reverse It only has you know, it’s really weird. Okay Anyways, it didn’t work very well with this rod This rod is actually pretty difficult to work because there’s no you know, there’s no actual rod on here How do you work your lures? How do you work your bait? How do you set the hook? No, you don’t spring it out like that. I tried it didn’t work very well now I tried using this while shore fishing and I would much rather use a regular rod. It was very difficult. Very frustrating Now when you saw me using this on the M rod episode it looked like I was catching a lot of fish really fast But what you didn’t see was all the cuts that we had to make because it was so frustrating to use It’s a novelty rod Novelty for fun. That’s about it. If anyone out there owns an Emmrod and loves it explain to me how you use it effectively because it didn’t work very well for me next one You–I know you guys have all seen this one the little pen rod Really really portable right? really portable, but let me tell you guys about something This is how you set it up. You unscrew this Put this back in and then screw it back in just like the standard rod Take a look at this. I mean this was what 15 bucks on Amazon This is plastic. This is plastic. The knobs are plastic Even maybe the bolt is plastic too- no it’s metal. This is plastic the drag Center right here Now let me tell you guys something that you might not know You can’t even cast this thing. It’s really hard to even cast this thing because when you cast it this wheel The– when you cast it the handle will spin around like crazy. That’s just how the rod works. That’s how the reel works In my opinion : toy does not work very well Now these can’t all just be toys right? some have gotta work, right if– they don’t just make it just for novelty, right? Let’s take a look at this one This one I ordered from a China company as well for very cheap, I think like five bucks Okay, I mean you can look at the guides, plastic, cheap But I think this will be pretty effective at the creek At least has got some length to it, you know, this emmrod has no length to it. It’s very unsensitive This one Works pretty well. I haven’t showed you guys on camera, but this one works pretty well, and it’s just as portable as the M rod Look how short this handle is Tiny, this thing is almost size of my hand, but you can put whatever reel you want on here I think what you should put on here is a small little light– a light little reel right here This was a nice little cheap one that I think will– it works pretty well much better than the other ones these two are definitely Novelty. Okay this one? It’s okay Now, this is my favorite one. That I have not shown anybody yet straight from China The instructions are all in China
[Erin] In China? The instructions are all in Chinese This one This one, okay, so first of all, it collapses like this and then Clicks on like that The way you release the line is you push this little trigger right here and this is how you hold the rod Like this you push the trigger That let’s line out. Okay And it extends to probably three feet, four feet It’s a left-handed rod so you ca– this is how you cast you put your finger down on the trigger Bring it above your head *wheep* and then when you press it again, it stops the line from coming out any more. So this has a lot of control Whoo, this is a fun one and I have not whoo dang. This thing casts far I have not tested this on fish yet, but I Use this to tease my dog right here Kira will run around trying to eat this thing and I get to practice my casting and retrieving speeds this thing’s nice because I can actually use this and the rod is actually long enough for me to feel the fish and set the hook Again, I wouldn’t target mega fish with this because this is not a great material You can always tell that these rods if they’re cheap or not by the guides here if they’re plastic or not what the material is made of how the How each segment is connected together and this is definitely better than than this one at least the segments. I think this rod was about $35 online Again it’s a pretty portable rod That I actually cannot wait to use on the field And it collapses really easily and then you push this button right here it’s in half and then you store it away There we go and it’s stored away So that’s my quick little review of the of my collection right now You’ve got to be careful with the micro rods that you choose to buy I found that it doesn’t really price of the rod does not necessarily equate to the quality of the rod Because something like this cost me this this was pretty expensive actually compared to this But I would much rather use this one my suggestion for you is to buy multiple different ones and field-test them all It’s kind of hard to tell by just picture a lot of times I like to feel out to see how I like it, but when that’s not available for me to feel it out I just order a couple of them and I see which one I like best But this one is by far the worst. This is by far the worst. It’s like I might as well be using the bamboo Skewer at this point. It’s probably one step above the bamboo. Skewer. Anyways, I’m curious to hear from you guys Which one of these rods do you have yourself? Which one of these rods would you like to try for yourself? Which let us know in the comments below which one you want to see us use next in an episode? We were thinking about doing a vs Episode where we compare something like this versus something like this and we have a fish off. What do you think? Let us know? Oh, You know what? I forgot to tell you guys. We have a brand new suggestion box at senkoskipper.com So basically, we’re a big community here. Right guys. I’d like to consider us a community. 1. I have a no-name brand 6'6" telescopic rod and a Diawa underspin 120 reel. Compact, light and quite capable. Could go to a longer rod, but the collapsed size goes up as rod length increases! This one is compact enough to fit in a backpack or even briefcase with no trouble.

  2. This one time me and my cousin were using pool noodles as fishing rod it was hilarious we caught lots of fish with them

  3. Your so right about the pen fishing rod instead you can make your $1 DIY fishing rod tutorial 🤗🤗🤗😃🤗🤗 keep fishing 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣

  4. The collapsing spin-cast from the box with all the Chinese lettering is basically a copy of the popeil pocket fisherman with a couple modifications. Had one of those. It was ok. I've had a few telescopic rods like the quantum telecast and the eagle claw pack rod. For what those are I had no complaints. I don't see a point in spending money for these gimmicky rods. Telescopic do fine for casual fishing.

  5. the cheap china pen rod actually works… it comes with 3 different reel types: baitcasting, spinning and fly reel… get the one that comes with the spinning reel… Ive caught lots of tilapia at the canal and largest was an 800 gram giant snakehead… use it like an ajing ultralight lol and its actually loads of fun for catching small fish or bait fish…

  6. lol please don't call your Cheap knock off an Emmrod. I love your channel but unfairly reviewing someones product by name because you didn't want to buy the real one is wrong.I have an Emmrod, its not the best pole. its not even as good as a real pole with the same $90 price tag but its small, strong, and great for kayaking once you get the hang of it. Like I said I'm a big fan I just feel this is only more unjustified hate for a product from another person who hasn't even tried the real thing.

Anyways keep making vids, much love my dude

  7. I’ve seen Youtuber Ish with fish pull in a pretty big fish with the blue pen rod at least it looks to be the same one

  8. Pen rod with fixed spool works ok. TA Fishing on you tube has done a series using the penn rod and has caught some decent fish on it

  9. I got an emmrod rod original and it's a nice rod to used for vertical fishing, boat fishing kayak fishing. The original one look more long than the knock off. Will be nice if you can get the original emmrod and do a test on it.

  10. Yes, pen rod is crappy especially the reel but rigged correctly and if there's fish around, it will catch fish. We caught trout with it by simply tossing the bait and line by hand. After a catch, the reel in is hilarious because it's super slow. So don't knock it yet. Micro pen rod is fun.

  11. I once saw a $250 micro fishing rod in my local tackle store.I realy think you should consider spending more money on micro rods if you are really serious about it.

  12. these are defo not for serious fishing but I think some would be great for small kids (4-5yrs) to get them into fishing. The pen rod would be light and easy to hold for them.

  13. 3rd rods actually pretty solid rod for a telescopic, snagged it plenty of times without it breaking and even reeled in a brick one time. Downside is the handle isn't comfortable, had blisters casting with lures for an hour and the eyelets rust over time

  14. Id say the folding one to do the test next on plus i think i would like the folding fishing poll as well it be grate to keep in your car so you can go fishing at the spare of the moment

  15. QUESTION; I was looking at your shop to buy some pdf's, which would I buy if I was fishing from a pier and from some rocks on the beach? (All my fishing is saltwater) Also is their any pdf that includes everything? Is there anyway we can get in contact through email so I could ask you a couple of questions on what's the right buy for me from your shop? Thanks in advance!

  16. @Senko Skipper, you should do the worlds cheapest fishing reel. It is like $6 https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53200-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338380287&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fitm%2FNew-Brand-Right-Handed-Reel-Round-Baitcasting-Saltwater-Fishing-Trolling-Reel-FF%2F163264837775%3FssPageName%3DSTRK%253AMEBIDX%253AIT%26var%3D462497665307%26_trksid%3Dp2060353.m1438.l2649%20

  17. My boyfriend caught our biggest fish an 8lb lake trout on one of these micro rods. They’re cheap no doubt about it but hell I’ve caught a huge black drum on a roll of tape with line tied off it, a hook, and shrimp so if you could make anything work for the love of fishing. Don’t get me wrong, we love our ugly sticks and have a variety of heavy duty and pro rods that were a pretty penny, but these rods are for fun on a budget not pro fishing. Like I said our record fish was on the pen rod you featured so I can’t hate on it.

  18. I actually bought a pen fishing rod with a tiny spinning reel and I replaced the line that came with it with an 8 lb mono.
Let me tell you something, for catching smaller fish that are not far away, the pen rod and reel is a great deal. And I caught grunts and juvie snappers, and a bluegill on this rod. I caught the grunts and snappers in Florida. And I caught a bluegill in Indiana when I visited my brother a few weeks ago.
Small and easy to take and fish anywhere.

  19. May You do a StCroix Mojo surf spinning rod draw in the chanel it would be superawesome!!! I apreciate you and your vídeos Senko, thank you 😊

  20. pen rod is ok with a actual spinning reel, it just needs to be connected properly, or buy a version with spinning reel. great for kids, easy to handle and cast, and strong. but that casting reel in video is junk.

  21. I got the pen rod for $10. The one with the spinning reel is way better than the baitcaster. The one with the spinning reel casts fine and works fine. I’ve caught many fish on that rod.

  22. The pen fishing rod is a good rod. I caught a 2 pound bass on one of them before. The one i used was the spinning combo. Not the baitcaster. That’s garbage. Spinning is a great combo overall

  23. A telescoping cane pole can be a walking stick when you add a cane tip. So it can help you to walk in and then you can catch fish with it. and when you are walking in it doesn't look like you are going fishing.

  24. I have a pen rod and the reel that comes with it is a spinning reel and it only cost $15 and I caught a barracuda that was almost a kilo.

  25. Hahaha! I love your product reviews. Fisherman are always looking the the next best thing. Most new ideas suck. Lol.

  26. haha you are buying the things Chinese(me) wont even buy, those are cheap toys u know 😛
u already know its shit when u see the $3 price tag haha, if u buy $30 rod i am sure its a different story

  27. Awesome vid 🙂and I have a pen fishing rod with a spinning reel on it and it works and It would be awesome if you tried to make a vid on how to saltwater fish with a spinning ice fishing rod and the eagle claw packit spinning is awesome and I catch trout on it 🙂 and I cot a 2lb 21in northern pike on the eagle claw packit and I used a 1/8oz drop shot 1ft high with a #8 j hook on a Berkeley natural floating trout worm and 12lb Berkeley big game monofilament on the reel and the picture is a my instagram themainestuntdummy96 the picture is me holding the pike on 6/18/2018

  28. i had a pen rod that i caught tons of bluegills and quite a few catfish with it. i changed the reel to a zebco 11 because the reel that came with it was trash

  30. Some of those pen rods are actually pretty damn good. Ive seen a couple YouTubers use them such as T.A outdoors and intense angler. Intense angler even landed a world record fish with one of these rods. I will link his video. https://youtu.be/nzxjzkidVMU.

  31. I had the Coleman Pen rod and reel and this thing was very sturdy. While waiting for my loads to be packed into the trailer as a commercial truck driver, I would go to the local parks or lakes that allow fishing and I would use this to catch some pretty good size fish. The last time I used this was to catch a very huge slab of crappie and he was delicious for dinner. I little girl who was at the lake was just asking me all sorts of questions on how to fish and what to use for bait. She only was using a straight stick she cur down herself and made a pole out of it. After about an hour, I had enough to put in my freezer in the truck and I gave her the Coleman, the look of surprise and the tears of joy were enough for me to know I made the right choice to give this to her. I know she will cherish it for a long time as I have for 5 yrs. I'm sure I will find another either on ebay or Amazon, but to teach a child to fish, they will be able to teach their siblings, their kids, and even their grandkids.

  32. Like several people I have a couple of pen rods and I use the spinning reel. The imitation baitcaster is a joke. I like the spinning reel and have caught a small bass. 🙂

  33. Every one has an opinion and that's fine, here's mine. I lived in Alaska for 19 years during which I did a lot of mountain biking. I had a little micro rod that would break down into a case about the size of a paperback novel. I'm sorry I don't remember the make of it. Because of my location, I would come across many small pristine streams and lakes. My tackle box was an Altoids can. I caught hundreds of trout on that little rod and always had a fresh fish meal on the trail. Like I said, my location was unique. I have no bad words for that little rod, it always caught my lunch without fail.

  34. The penrod's actually aren't that evil if you get the open-face version or put an ultra-light open face reel on it. It beats the hell out of using a handline when bushcrafting but I'm thinking anything above about 2 lb might destroy it

  35. i had the small drum reel thing for sabiki. it was terrible and can't even reel in fast. luckily there's no bigger fish attacking the bait fish.

  36. I have a REAL Emmrod even tho I don't fish with it much. It's a great boat rod. I have a baitcasting reel on mine and just drop it overboard. Reeled in a few good size catfish with it and not a issue.

  37. the fishing rod and reel combos at pen fishing rod .com are the shit and are the best on the market for what they are made for . the folding gear is made for camping and bugging out more or less and not intended for someone's main fishing gear . a butter knife will work as a screwdriver but I don't have one in my toolbox but in a jam I have used one . just like the real intention on the micro folding rods there is a time for them to be the best choice .

  38. I own the pen rod. I enjoy it mostly to get minnows and small fish, I just put my smallest hook on and the small ones go for it. It's a novelty for sure, but I like it for the fun of it.

  39. Your untested looks like someone was working on Ron Popeil Pocket fisherman design. I've caught so many bass, pike, musky, carp, catfish, trout and even many large saltwater on a circa late 70s or early 80s pocket fisherman – until it was stolen. Brought with me when it wasn't practical or even a thought to have a full size pole.

  40. With the pen rod get the spinning reel version u can cast it I had both and the spinning rod I caught bass pike crappie and trout it is very good and fun

  41. The penrod you have has a reel for ice fishing, I'm pretty sure the Emrod is also for ice fishing. That's why they are weird to use and can't cast well. For a better pen rod I suggest you get one of the good ones at http://penfishingrods.com with either the baitcaster reel or regular spinning reel.

  42. I disagree with the penrod analysis. i've never used the baitcaster on a penrod, but i've caught a decent 6lb carp with one that had a spinning reel and used the fly reel too. i've done float fishing, method feeder fishing and even a bit of ledgering (with a light weight). It's produced most times. The reels can be flimsy, but the rod is reliable, only one reel has broken on me because i didn't attempt maintain it's condition.

Pen Fly reel- hard to cast, eyes on the rod don't accommodate for thinnest fly line. So regular line with split shots… with no decent weight you're not getting further than 3 meters.
spinning- great reel, doomed to break eventually, unless it's cleaned after.

  43. Buy a bunch and see for yourself?? That's why we get online and watch product reviews. That's why any good review includes field test. That's where you went wrong.

  45. I've the bait casting pen one, haven't used it yet, but I do fish a lot of my small direct drive reels; handle spins when you cast. I don't think I'll have much issue with it…
